Facebook iPad App Gets Trending, Games Sidebar
Facebook for the iPad is getting a slight facelift. The latest update adds the Facebook sidebar from the Web version of the social network —with reminders and trending topics, videos, and games— to the iPad.
Turn your iPad into landscape mode to access Trending Videos—a personalized selection of the most-shared videos among the user’s demographic—as well as new game options—one which showcases titles you already play, a second with new games that may interest you.
“We’re testing new ways to help people discover more timely and entertaining content on [the] tablet,” software engineer Victor Medeiros said in a blog post about the U.S.-based Facebook update.
When the social network launched 10 years ago, it was geared toward connecting college students. A decade later, everyone and their mother (literally) use the site for more than keeping in touch: more than 70 percent of folks worldwide using the iPad app played a Facebook-connected game in the last 90 days.
“So we’re also dedicated a section of the iPad app to games people play, and over time, we will include ads where game developers can engage players,” Medeiros said.
Game developers that want to be featured in the updated app can register their iPad app with Facebook in App Dashboard, integrate Facebook Login (for those who don’t have a Canvas app), and upload a video to the App Details page in the App Center.
This isn’t Facebook’s only app update: On Friday, the company gave its standalone Messenger app a boost with Instant Video Sending—the ability to shoot and play 15-second video messages from the in-app camera.
Last week, the social network also revealed plans to give U.S. users more control over what products and services they see. The new preferences tool will be accessible on every day; select the drop-down menu and choose “Why am I seeing this?” to add or remove interests.
Users can opt out of this type of ad targeting altogether by specifying browser settings on the Web and mobile apps.
